🎉 150 Newsletters (and Still Learning)

Hi Reader,

This is my 150th newsletter.

Whether you’ve been reading from the start or just joined recently, thank you.

This newsletter has taught me a lot – both as a writer and a chronic-juggler-of-too-many-projects-at-once. But most of all, it's taught me about experimentation.

I’ve learned that momentum comes from actually trying things.

(Yes, the thing I so often preach about is still difficult for me at times).

It's one thing, for example, to edit a project for clarity, it's something else entirely to share it, get feedback on it, and learn what messages really stick.

I know that probably sounds obvious. But, gosh, I've lost count of how many times I've had to learn and relearn that lesson over the years.

Even now, while writing this newsletter, I found myself stuck editing a sentence over and over for a solid 20 minutes before coming to my senses, deleting it entirely, and moving on.

In that spirit, this fall, I want to try sharing more things in draft mode – ideas that are in progress, tools I’m testing, frameworks I’m still building.

Is that a little scary for me? Yes. Does it twist my stomach into a pretzel just thinking about it? Sure does! 🫣

But, will embracing the status quo (and hiding behind my relentless perfectionism) get me where I want to go? No, growth comes from action. 😌

If this newsletter has ever sparked an idea, helped you get unstuck, or encouraged you to keep going – would you forward it to someone else who might benefit from it? Help me keep this momentum going.

Here’s to the next 150.

You can view past editions here and entrepreneur interviews here.

Take a moment to pause & reflect.

  • What have you learned over the last season of your life or work?
  • What are you still learning (or relearning) right now?

Actions, experiments, & things to try next.

Celebrate your own milestone, big or small. Write it down, tell someone, or mark it with a moment of gratitude.

Cheers! 🍾 🥂

Michael

Hi Reader, Most businesses start here: You’ve got something that works. You’ve found a few customers. Now you want more of them. That’s Market Development: you're trying to sell your existing offer to new people. It's a pretty foundational growth strategy and an ideal place to start because it forces you to really refine the story you're telling. For the month of September, we're focused on strengthening your sales & marketing through storytelling. Each week, I'll offer tips, questions, and...

Hi Reader, At least once a week, usually around dinner time, the doorbell chimes. I glance at my phone, pull up the doorbell camera, and there they are: a salesperson making their rounds. Solar panels, new windows, knives, car detailing — you name it. Most of the time, I ignore them. But when I do engage, the tactics are predictable: quick attempts at trust, appeals to social proof — “we just helped your neighbors save a ton of money.” To me, it feels no different than a spam call, a cold DM,...

Hi Reader, As I transition out of summer mode and back into work mode, I’m using a familiar tool: Start / Stop / Continue. It’s simple. And it works — as long as you’re cool to occasionally look in the mirror, slow down to notice your behavior and energy, thoughtfully critique yourself, and do the hard work of self-improvement. But, hey, who isn’t? 😅 Personally, after time off, I’m always itching to do exercises like these — I can’t wait to recommit to my daily rituals and consider which...
